The test
of the artist does not lie in the will with which he
goes to work, but in the excellence of the work he
produces. ~ St. Thomas Aquinas

“Practically all great artists accept the influence of
others. But . . . the artist with vision sees his
material, chooses, changes, and by integrating what he
has learned with his own experiences, finally molds
something distinctly personnel.” ~ Romare Howard Bearden

New style seminars for
2007
 |
The Class - My workshops
are 'Lecture and painting' based workshops where art theory
and art education
is the focus of the class. Lecture/painting workshops are
based on more in-depth studies of a particular subject with
emphasis placed on the principles of art. The topics
offered are accompanied by the theory and mechanics of the
lesson. As steps are delivered to the student, an
explanation of the reasoning behind the step is expanded on,
and developed through demonstration and open discussion with
the group. |
 |
The Objective - My class
is designed to raise awareness for a more ‘critical
thinking’ approach to learning to paint and to encourage
‘reasoning’ and ‘problem solving’ as important aspects of
learning art. |
 |
The Emphasis – All
workshops are taught with the emphasis placed on 'Colour Theory' The goal is to
give the student 'skills' that are transferable as well as
to give them a clearer understanding of why certain
pigments, choices and techniques are used to create a
particular effect. Demonstrations and class discussion
accompany |
 | Teaching Method -
Due to this method of teaching, when certain ‘designs’ are
offered as a group art ‘project’ – The goal is not to
‘finish’ the design in class time, however students will be
introduced to all the necessary skills that will enable them
to finish the study on their own. |
 |
Class Size - I
occasionally limit the size of my classes for the benefit of
each student. Please discuss this prior to confirmation. Due
to the nature of these workshops, it is necessary that
students be afforded the opportunity to receive some hands
on instruction and individual assistance when needed.
(Larger classes sometimes do not allow for this style of
instruction and interaction between teacher and student) |

information provided, converting it into good design and create
viable colour schemes.

tailoring and editing them to create their individual
compositions. |
 | This
seminar is to seed artistic confidence, empowering the
student with skills to 'see' and 'read' information from a
photograph. |
 |
Several techniques, styles and methods are taught and demonstrated during this
class. As each student works on a different composition,
all students benefit from the wide variety of methods,
critique and lessons that are taught via these designs. |

Teacher Recommendations
for all seminars
Due to the nature of my classes
it is recommended that all students be informed of my class
format and goals prior to class. Students are highly encouraged
to bring still cameras to record the steps and are also
encouraged to take personal notes during class. No audio
recording devices, such as personal recorders are permitted in
class at any time. It is important for students to realize that
these are not ‘project’ based classes but theory based classes.
It is mandatory
that all students must have the following supplies at
class. No exceptions please.
 |
Masterson stay wet
palettes with either blue or yellow cover. NO small palettes
or ‘meat trays’ will do. (Colour theory and blending
techniques require this larger surface) |
 |
Misting bottle for hydrating
the palette. |
 |
3 Small containers with tight
lids for mediums. |
 |
Students who have to travel
any distance are advised to bring ‘Plastic cubbies with flip
lids’ for taking home paint to complete their work. I am not
responsible for paint after it has left the classroom. |
These are just a
sampling of the vast photo collection that I use for teaching my
design seminars.
