Summer Day..
One day our daughter was sitting in the sunshine, on the edge of a row boat with her feet hanging in the water. She is very blonde and her hair caught the light like gold threads. I changed the composition to create this more 'romantic' mood.  The fabric is created with a 'sergeant' effect, utilizing several colours from within the design itself, this is one way to carry colour through the design. I personally love this painting and the sparkle of the water.

The Fence
Driving to a class one day, my route took me past a yard with roses growing over the fence.  I was so taken with the colorful spectacle that I stopped the car to take a photo of the scene. after class that night I painted the design and have taught this piece several times.  there is something about the perspective that is a appealing.

Wild Berries
I went through a stage in my painting career when I loved painting berries and leaves. I always found the composition of wild berries to be appealing, prickles and all.

Angel Curls
A gentle face, pretty soft feathery wings and dozens of wild roses.  A romantic composition that made me think of blessings from above.  This is an older painting that I created several years ago. The tiny soft angelic curls, almost like those of a cherub were fun to paint. I used a different light source, coming from above and high up, to bathe her in blessings.  This design is painterly and soft, I tried to match the soft and 'airy' brushwork to the subject and the mood of the painting.

Christmas Eve
Inspired by a soft sculpture figure that I created one Christmas season in the past. This very cuddly whimsical 'Father Christmas' was the first design I ever created and painted with Traditions paint.  I not only fell in love with the paint that winter season, but I wanted to create a Holiday design for our family decorations.  I do not often paint whimsy, so this design was a change of pace for me. It has since become a popular studio seminar design. If you are interested in this design when it is eventually published, please contact me by email to be put on the list to receive one.  It will be released on CD.

Jester
Jesters are a favorite of mine, I have collected several of them over the years and often feel that we can certainly have fun with this topic. I am presently working on another, see below for the work in progress. I always feel I can take artistic license with this subject.

©

Jesters provide us with an opportunity to play with colour, story and mood.  here I have  created a design that is a partner for the one on the right. while working on this design I began to develop another idea so have to adapt it further.

Teddy and Me
For a little girls room.  Teddy and me was again about texture.  The long dark shiny hair, the softness of the worn and well loved teddy and the pretty little dress made of organdy fabric came together to spell little girls.  I painted this design originally as a cabinet door and it has be painted on several different surfaces since.  many students have changed the hair colour to suit their own children and grandchildren.

William the Sailor
Little William was painted from a photo of my father in-law as a very young child.  He wore the traditional blue sailor suit that many little boys wore just prior to World War I.  Here he is seen pulling his toy boat in front of the family drugstore. This design was featured in the Decorative Painter magazine in 2004.

Young beauty
My Dad carried this snapshot of my Mom in his wallet. Years ago I painted it, her glorious pose, the young beauty of the late 1940's was dreaming of a bright future as a young bride. I always loved this photo, the polka-dot ruffled skirt, the flowing drapery, her crossed legs and the the straw shoes that are still popular today. There is an aloof elegance to the pose.

Shape following strokes are used to create the movement of the eye through the folds of the fabric.

Teddy and Me©

Objective: The goal of this painting was to teach the human form and was a study in texture created by brushwork. Using washes and scrumbling a soft semi opaque layer over the background creates the effect for depth. The effects of light quality on a high key painting and creating a 'wall paper' background to support the design were also part of the exercise. Shape following strokes are used to create the movement of the eye through the folds of the transparent fabric.

Young Beauty©

Objective: The goal is to learn 'form' and is a study in the painting of fabric. This design uses a more 'painterly style' The goal of this workshop is to show how fluid movement of  brushstrokes can create movement of fabric.  This presents an interesting play of texture fabric.

White Flowers©

Objective: I painted this as a person study several years ago, in fact I no longer have this painting as it was badly damaged in a move and was scrapped. It was an exercise in the painting of fabric, soft free form white flowers. This design used a more 'painterly style' looser style. as an artist who is always learning and experimenting, I see several things that I would do differently today, but this image is a reminder to me that I will always be on a quest for more knowledge and that I have moved forward.

'The Painter in his Studio' by Francois Boucher (French)

order..
The paintings on these pages are not listed in any order, nor the order that they were painted in. They reflect a body of work over several years.

Pretty Pansy
This painting was created after a design class one night.  I was away travel teaching and was playing with the leftover paint on my palette.  I picked up a brush and began to doodle with the single brush and drew a few lines to create the box. I painted the entire painting with a few filbert brushes and an angled shader and thought that this would be a good little exercise to teach students about brush-control to create form and texture.

Parrot Tulip
Colour and simple beauty.  Parrot tulips are always so full of life.  This fully opened one reminded me of a ripe peach.  Just overflowing with colour.

Pond Corner
This small dark area of a garden is often forgotten, yet it is teaming with life and interest. I was inspired to paint this design when I visited a friends garden. Water lily's have always been such lovely little things, like china saucers full of water drops that dance around like pearls in a dish! As a child, I loved to play in a neighbors mossy fish pond, catching the tiny guppy fish in the lily pads. The turtle, always a part of pond life seemed at home in this painting and I took the liberty of adding one to the composition.

Holiday Hospitality
Sunshine and winter seem to make us all feel better about the long days.  I had been snow shoeing one evening with my husband, and the light was streaming through the trees.  The image that popped into my head was that of little red riding hood, however the story was different in my min's eye.  Here we have a woman with a blue cloak visiting a neighbor with a holiday wreath.  From little red riding hood to 'Little Women'  the evolution of an idea all began when out  snow shoeing!

The Map Reader
An older design of mine, but one of my favorites. I have always enjoyed teaching this design, the colours are warm and inviting and the subject quite masculine.  The face has always reminded me of a kind and gentle soul, wise and interesting. the old parchment map in his hand is telling the story of his travels.

Daisy Mae
Daisy Mae was inspired by Spring.  long golden hair, the fresh daisy and the delicate fabric of her dress. I am always affected by texture, I think next to colour it is the facet of inspiration.  the texture of clean soft hair, the texture of the petals, the spongy centers of the flowers and the crunch of the fabric, come together to create this simple design.

Breakfast at Dawn
This painting was created after a design class one day.  I was away travel teaching and was playing with the leftover paint on my palette.  I picked up a brush and began to doodle with the single brush and drew a few lines to create the form of the woman. I painted the entire painting with a few strokes and in 25 minutes.  I have since taught this several times as a very quick warm-up study.

Sunflowers
Living in the Okanagan valley with long summers gives up the chance to grow giant sunflowers.  The shape of these oversize flowers offers an opportunity to study form. We are always reminded of happy faces when we see sunflowers.  I cant help but think they have personalities of their own, the way their heads stand proudly or bow with grace.

White Flowers
I painted this composition while camping one summer.  We were moving between houses and decided to go camping for a week instead of holding up in a hotel. The subject had nothing to do with the camping trip, the 'formality' of the design had no relation to living in a tent with 2 kids, a dog and a guinea pig.  I think I was dreaming of more elegant times ahead in a new home - far removed from life in a tent!
